A Baby is in the house

Dear Mr Baby

It’s been more than an hour now since you were born and I am going to give you the most awesome gift by starting a grand tradition of writing posts for babies. This post will contain almost everything (some things might seem trivial when you get to read this post for the first time) you want to know about the day, week, month and year of your birthday :) I will be leaving out some stuff because I am guessing, Sujai and Sam will be happy to tell you. I am not taking any fun away from them. This post will be on the net forever for you to read when you are either 5, 15, 25, 105 or later.

You came into this world during one of the rarest events, MS Dhoni is 206 not out overnight against Australia in the first test of 2013 Border Gavaskar Trophy. Baltimore Ravens won the Superbowl in 2013. You were born on Oscars night and I will get you Dvd of the movie whichever wins the Best movie award tonight and we are watching it together.

You are sharing your birthday with Gautham Vasudev Menon, an ace tamil director who has an unique direction style. Ricky Ponting has been announced to lead Mumbai Indians in this year's IPL. Harbhajan Singh is playing in his 100th test in Chennai. VVS Laxman is proving to be a very bad addition to the commentary team.

Breaking Bad and Dexter will be ending this year. The Hobbit - Desolation of Smaug will be out by the year end. Die Hard 5 was released and was awesome. Aarti akka, a friend of your aunt got admit for PhD. There was a Ilayaraja concert two days back which we missed. Vishwaroopam was released and went on to become a huge hit. The visual of Adiye from Kadal song was non sense.

There is crazy electricity problem in Tamil Nadu. I am not really sure about what is happening with WWE. I heard that District Collector of Madurai is doing a real great job with his Facebook page. KKR are the defending IPL champs. Mike Hussey retired from cricket and this might possibly see the end of Tendulkar's career too.

Trisha and Tamannah are still single. I think you are in Pollachi right now near Coimbatore, which is the home of the famous Annapoorna sambar and you must try it when you get bored of all the Cerelac they feed u. Man of Steel, directed by Zack Snyder and produced by Christopher Nolan is the most anticipated movie of the year.

Rajnikanth's Kochadaiyan will be hitting the theaters this year. Your dad recently finished his MD in style (I can’t believe how I forgot this) and your aunt cleared IPS exams the same day. Yashu (your aunt's present roommate) was the first american to know about you.

I am listening to Batman - the Dark Knight Rises as I am writing this post. There is a 7 feet tall fast bowler in the Pakistan cricket team and Graeme Smith recently played as 100th test as captain. I actually texted your mom, "Watchu doin" when she was giving birth to you.
Your dad met Samantha, a very cute actress a week back. The movies that were released closest to your birthday were Aadhibhagavan(a flop) and kai po che(a ok-ok movie). The first thing your aunt bought for you was a blue jumper suit that says NYPD.

Ok, so these are the things that I thought you must know. I am not going to make this a boring post by telling you what is in store for you when you get old. But I will say you this, you are going to have a super fun life for 2 reasons, 1. You are among some of the most amazing people and 2. You are going to have me in your life.

If you are wondering, who I am, I am the most awesomatic fun person you will ever meet. We are going to be the best of friends. I am a great friend and a better wingman ;)
Mr Baby, I am going to teach how to live. \m/

PS I wanted you to be named Wolverine/Iron Man/Shriram. If you were not named any of these, just know that I did not go down without a good fight.

Happy Birthday Rajnikanth

Rajnikanth - a bald, ageing person , a grand father, sporting a saint look  in a very simple outfit and having a  fashionable Premier Padmini to his name. Yet you come to Tamil Nadu and say his name, be it a youngster, a senior citizen, a house wife, a kid, a baby or anyone for that matter, the reaction is the same and its something that cannot be explained but experienced.

Being a Rajnikanth fan is more than just a unique feeling. It is being a part of a huge world wide group that is driven by a common factor for the love of one extra-ordinary actor and a human being.

Rajnikanth may never get to do a series like Terminator, he may never get Hans Zimmer as the music director of his movie, he may never get a chance to do a role like Will Smith in Pursuit of Happiness or Bruce Willis in Die Hard or Christian Bale in Batman. He may never sport a six pack rock hard abs, he may never perform some daredevil stunt sequence on his own, he may never get to act in an epic adventure like the Lord of the Rings. But the thing about him is, he doesn't have to.

He is Rajinikanth. Period.

It is very common for people to judge his acting, find his style statements funny/childish or feel that the fan following that he commands is over rated. They make the common mistake of seeing things keeping in mind that Rajinikanth is just an actor. But to us, he is something more. People follow many super heroes and go to comic con or a Halloween dressed as a superman or a batman or a wolverine or a iron man. We don't need superheroes to follow. We have Rajinikanth.

There is no particular definition to the phenomenon, that is Rajinikanth. There will never be. Every person will have his/her own version and will be happy about it.

At 63 years he earns more than anyone in the country in his field, gets instant recognition throughout the world and has his birthday celebrated like a festival. He cannot be compared to any other successful people from any field as he has scripted his own fairy tale and is leading a life that everyone wants to but only a very few have led in the past.

Down the years, he might call it quits for the showbiz industry and continue his simple life. But he will never retire from our hearts. Rajnikanth playing the arrogant cop in Moondru Mugam, a robot in Enthiran, a struggling family man from Aarithilirundu Aruvathu and a flamboyant comedy role in Thillu Mullu will be among the best performances ever. His avatar as Basha redefined what a mass entertainer is.

With New Rajinikanth jokes coming up on the internet every day for the past year and gaining popularity among wide(influenced by the Chuck Norris jokes) audience. If someone were to walk along the roads of Chennai and share a Rajinikanth joke with a typical Rajinikanth fan, there is no second thoughts that both of them will have a good laugh about it. After which, when the person moves on, the fan calmly hopes in his/her heart that one day Rajinikanth will do exactly in the joke in real life and make that dumbass(who cracked the joke) look stupid.

If some neutral person comes across this and terms me a crazy fan, I would encourage him/her to watch a Rajinikanth movie at theaters in Tamil Nadu, feel the frenzy and read this post again.

(Rajnikanth songs were played during the whole time of writing this post)

-a humble Rajinikanth fan.

Happy birthday thalaiva !!

Down the Memory Lane

Fifteen years from now, I will still claim Sourav Ganguly as my favorite player. I will still be admiring Rahul Dravid's impenetrable defense. I will still enjoy replays of VVS Laxman's shots. I will still feel proud on seeing Anil Kumble's 10 wicket haul. Cricket will never be the same to me again.

With Ricky Ponting coming out to the press and calling it quits, everyone is expecting the same from SRT. That call will come from him, may be not today, not tomorrow but some day and that day will leave in the cross roads. I can move on and support the Kohlis and Dhonis and Amlas. But I would rather collect all the videos that are there of Sourav, the Waugh brothers, RT Ponting, M Atherton, A Stewart and reminisce what was a golden age of the modern day International cricket.

Its been 15 years since I started following cricket. It was the finals of the Sharjah cup between India and Australia. I will never forget the 24 made by Sourav Ganguly. I will always cherish the days when I used to wake up 5 in the morning to see India bashed by the mighty Australians led by Stephen Waugh day after day, match after match.

There was something about Michael Slater that caught my eye. He proved it was not a bad idea to score at 4+ run rate in a test match. I could see perseverance paying big time for Justin Langer and Rahul Dravid. Adam Glichrist was out of the world. VVS and Mark Waugh were creating magic using their bats. Ylou could high just seeing their cover drives. Sangakkara and Mahela belong to the same class. M Azharuddin's footwork was one of the best.

Sourav Ganguly was different. A horrible fielder, an arrogant man and vulnerable to bouncers. In spite of all these, he can make Eden go crazy just by walking into it. I have seen the sixers from Afridi, Sanatha Jayasuriya, KP and every other strong built cricketer, but nothing came close to the sight of Sourav dancing down the track and lofting one outside the stadium.

Brian Lara was a craftsman of his own league. I always wondered how he could have so much time in having such a high bat lift and even after that he was able to strike the ball so clean. If SRT was Batman, Lara was Wolverine.

M Atherton and M Atapattu tested the spectators' patience. They would sweat it out, grind into the opponents nerves and would never want to leave the field. Rahul had the similar trait. He seemed to hate getting out. He just was not fond of that idea.

Brett Lee and Anil Kumble was warriors. Cricket meant more to them than almost anything. They get hurt, you see them back on the field in no time with a band aid. They along with M Hayden  and the big Inzaman-ul-Haq had such a dominating presence over the opposite team.

Nathan Astle was a different story. He was the earlier version of B McCullum but with less dancing. The innings when he almost took NZ home when they were 9 down against England, those 4 sixes of Andy Caddick's over was quite a sight.

Glenn Mcgrath, SR Warne, Ambrose, Walsh, Waqar Younis and Wasim Akram were just too good to bat against. M Muralitharan was a fox.

Gone are the days where the above mentioned players took the field and produced such excellent cricket. I am and will always be proud to have the most of the cricket played by them.

I love you forever and after

July 13th

"Dude, I got the toast, its showtime" shouted Shyam. I made some last minute adjustments, took a deep breath and started walking to what was one of the most important events in my life. Barath went ahead as I asked him to officiate the wedding for us."Hey Superstar, all set? Any last minute jitters?" asked Swathi, Shyam's wife. I smiled and walked passed her to see Sunanda aka fire sporting a new saree and was full of smiles.

We took up the stage.

"Dearly beloved, we are gathered here today for joyous union of Raman and Ragini..." started Barat. I was supposed to give a big toast at the end of the ceremony and I practised it a hundred times. Being the groom, I was also supposed to tell my owes before everyone, and surprisingly I was not scared as I knew exactly what I wanted to say. "Raman, you have something to say?" asked Barat and I felt the entire crowd's stare on me. I turned to face Raagini, she wore the same smile when ever I got her doughnuts. I felt ready started,

"Raagini, its been 5 years since we have been together and it has been one hell of a ride. You have been a great friend, an awesome girl friend and a wonderful human being. You constantly gave me one new reason everyday to love you more. You  have grown more stupid which helps our relationship go well. If God were to give me a chance to start over my life from beginning, I would always want you to be girl whom I want to sweep off the feet and fall in love with, off all the girls in the world, which include Priyanka Chopra, Tamanna, Trisha and most importantly Sunny Leone. You will always be the one who I want to crack my jokes with, the one with whom I want to dance with, with whom I want to go to movies, cricket matches, with whom I want to go on trips. I want you to be the one to tell me that Ganguly's IPL team will win IPL one day, that wolverine is  real and I will get to meet him, that i drive like Lightning McQueen, that I can get the bow and arrow used by Legolas and that our seven kids will be awesome like me and pretty like you. I will keep comparing you to all the pretty things in the world, I will keep doing the craziest things ever to make you smile, I will keep holding your hand when we walk together,I will keep fighting for what I think is right,  I will keep making fun of your brother and your friends, I will keep telling your mom is super pretty, I will keep doing what I do best, to love you with all the love that there is.It has been a wonderful opportunity to have known you, been with you, to have gotten your consent to live the rest of my life with you, and I promise you that the rest of our lives is going to be fun, crazy, full of tears , laughter, hustle, chaos and through all that I will always be with you."

and then Raagini had her turn to say what she had in her mind. The final formalities were over and I turned towards Barath to hear the six words I have been waiting my lifetime to hear.

Happy Valentine's day

18 December 2011

Yes I read a book and I am reviewing it !!!

I was never a lover of books, as it requires a huge amount of concentration from me(I am easily distracted), a silent place and time. Its very rare that I get all these three, and I used that time to finish The Immortals of Meluha, a brilliant read. I turned around to continue Fringe, when I saw the new Flipkart order lying on the table, and I opened to find another book - The Two Fates.

I am not the kind of guy, who reads two books in a row. Sure, I do a lot of things for a long period of time like watch all 5 days of a boring test match, sit through 16 episodes of LOST in a night. But 2 books in a row, never did and never could. It was a sunday evening and I had the strangest urge to check this book out."May be just 2 chapters" I told myself.

Five hours later, I had finished the book(I went to Pondicherry in between for 3 hours and got a new pair of slippers). So here goes the review.

The Book is by a debutante novelist, Judy Balan and looked like a parody of Two States, a novel by Chetan Bhagat. Half hour into the book and I changed my take on the book. It was no spoof, it was partially based on Two States yet refreshingly different.

The plot is simple. Characters not too many so I did not get confused. The most attractive thing about the book is that the author, a blogger takes her writing style from her blogs to her novel. She did not try to sound sophisticated by using big words. Instead she was simple and that gives the book a huge boost.

The story is from the heroine's point of view and its good enough to make you push yourself to the next page to the last. It is about a married couple who go through a marriage crisis and how the events unfold. The inter state marriage and the diversity compliments the story well.

Another important thing is that there is a character for everyone to relate to in the book. Every author tastes victory when he/she succeeds in making the reader connect to the plot on some level. Another thing to note is that her descriptive narration of every character makes you wonder if some or all the characters are based on real life people who are involved in the author's life. If it were true, I would love to meet Reshma Aunty and Trinky, also the hot chick Karthick brings home :).

The book size is relatively small and is definitely a one sit read. The whole story is so nicely written so there is good feel at the end of the book although people could predict the end(I did).

The author also manages to squeeze in her usual words she uses in her blogs(yes I read some of the blog posts) and her jargons. I would love to see her continue the way with her unique way of writing, keeping it simple and fun.

My Verdict - The Two Fates (The Story of my divorce)

An Entertaining first attempt - 3.5/5(Like it matters)

Flypaper - a movie so simple yet so catchy !!!

Amidst the hype surrounding Tendulkar's 100th ton, the arrival of Sunny Leone on Bigg Boss, two huge let downs of the latest tamil movies, Barney crying in HIMYM, Dexter Morgan trying to get near DDK and so many things, I got time to catch a movie last night and it was totally worth it.

Flypaper :

The cast is not big, the lighting in the movie sucked, or at least the one in the print which I took from the internet. The movie starts with a woman entering a bank and a woman leaving the same. So the director just pulled off an entire movie in a single building.

Patrick Dempsey, known for the cheesy girlie flicks is the lead who has an obsession with numbers walks into a bank to get change and gets trapped between two sets of robbers who come in exactly the same time to rob the bank. Ashley Judd is the female lead and she looks seriously old. The heist goes south when Patrick discovers that a FBI guy has been killed in the middle of the gun fight in the bank and he discovers there is something greater than just a heist going down in the bank.

The rest of the movie reveals which gang succeeds in getting the money with so many twists, I mean there are so frigging many twists. The cast is small yet supportive and clinical. The movie has you engaged till the final frame and that is refreshing.

The movie cannot compared with the classics like Ocean's series in the Heist category but there is a small spark in it that keeps the audience engaging. Patrick delivers big time as he takes the entire movie on his shoulders.

I would give it 8/10 against imdb's 6.3.

A Supernovan Farewell !!!

Date : 26th April
Venue : Pandiyan Hotel

Every Great thing becomes better with the way it ends

The day had finally arrived and 52 of us of the total 70 could make it to the hotel where a conference hall was booked for the final send off. The day kicked off in an ordinary fashion with people scattered around the hall filling up AG notes and having a private chat with their own gangs. Sethu, who had the whole day planned out was calling up the register numbers to divide the whole class into teams of five. The whole class was sitting in groups with a table and that gave a classy look.

The first thing was singing competition, where one from every team had to take the mike and sing. Suresh started with 3 songs from Tamil, English and Hindi which was adjudged as the winning performance by the judges. Next was I, Shriram Narayan and I made use of the mike in my own way and did not bore the people. Then Vinoth Babu came up and ended his desire of singing before the class. Virasundarii's song which impressed Ramji was heard once more, one last time(hopefully) and finally the trio of Sabrish, Prasanth and Sivagurunathan made an entertaining attempt with their remix of a classic.

The next item on the itenary was Dumb Charads which also was a hit. The only thing I will never forget is how Sriram could not act out Ayan by showing Iron Box. My mind voice read, "Ithellam kalyanam panni enna than panna pogutho". Rajkumar again proved he was the best in Dumb C and others too fared well.

It was time for lunch and the menu was rather good for the occasion and people were having a nice time with four girls using the oppurtunity to take the mike and singing songs and dedicating each one to a particular person. That ended and soft music was on for the whole lunch session.

The post lunch session started with girls and guys telling what they liked and disliked in the others and it was a slow start yet good. Then we moved on to the classic Q&A session where everyone took up the mike and people like Rajkumar and Prasanth were under some serious fire. The girls too did participate in equal amount and it was great fun.

The time crossed 5 30 and we were told, the time limit had been reached. But none of us wanted to leave. Everyone on some point was at the mike, so each and everyone would carry a pleasant memory with him/her. At the end, Sethu took the mike and started like, "This is it, no more come on da boy !!!, no more Kanna laddu thina aasaya !!" and he was not able to continue and we knew it was time. We left the hall with a soft tune of our theme song which we suttufied from Ayan's title playing on the dying moments of what was a wonderful day.

We assembled at the entrance of the hotel and started taking group photos. People were taking photos with their close ones, their lab batchmates and it was evident in everyone's face that everyone wanted some reason, any reason no matter how silly it was, to stay there some more time. Every girl walked up to every guy and let them knew that they were vacating tomorrow or the day after and guys did the same.

We could have not asked for a better send off. Four years of fun had a perfect finish. We will not miss Madurai, Madurai will miss us.

Some Classic Moments :

.) Sethu's plan for the day
.) Suresh's "itha na solliye aaganum" speeches
.) Girls like Shenbagaveni and Vimala who are supposed to be shy making full use of the mike
.) Nivas' running comments
.) The theme song in the end (yes, I had to mention it again)
.) The final Group photos
.) Some girls and even boys going down in tears
.) Every1 taking up the mike
.) Virasundarii's R-E-M-O
.) Girls singing in Lunch
.) DJ Pauldurai
.) Csk Vs MI during lunch
.) Filling up AGs
.) "I ll miss u all" by literally every one who took the mike
.) Saranya calling Raghuram as Thambi :(
.) Every second of the whole day

Now that everyone has left and there is nothing to do, all that we could do is hope we will meet sometime in future and everyone remembers the four years we had been through. We did miss the 18 who could not make it.

History Repeats Itself

june 25, 1983
sometime after 23 00 hours

He was just finishing up his works at the college and being his final year in the bachelors, he was taking a stroll to his mansion with his friends. This day was extra special as the underdogs, the Indian team takes on the mighty West Indies in the Third Prudential World Cup final and he was to see the match with his friends on a very questionable Television set on the reception hall of the place he was staying. The match ended and the Indian team emerged victorious, he went on rides through the empty roads of the city, celebrating the victory with his friends.

april 02,2011
sometime after 23 00 hours

He was getting ready to go to this friend's place. All his friends were supposed to show up to see the grand finale of the tenth World Cup between two formidable sides, the Indians and the Lankans. It was the final year of his bachelors and the fact that this match would be the last which he will be witnessing with his college friends never left his mind. The match was witnessed completely with uninterrupted power supply, thanks to the TNEB. The Indians won it after 28 long years. He celebrated in his own way and took a drive with his friends through the city with his friends.

In the first half "he" refers to my dad and in the second half, "He" refers me.

Right from when I was little, my dad his own version of the World Cup winning moments and what happened and I never get tired of listening to it. His story always made me wonder what it would be like if I went through something same and never did I know, I will go through something exactly the  same.

17 March 2011

The Supernovan Premier League

The whole idea came into existence as there were many attempts to do together as the whole class as the college days are racing to an end.  There was an appeal from girls to play the game of cricket involving both the guys and girls. But that idea went down the trash as it was very difficult to execute it. So boys came up with another plan to have the girls as involved as possible. So the girls divided into four teams, evolved into four franchises and started roping in boys(all 39 of em) who were the players in this case and thus evolved the Supernovan Premier League (the first and sadly the only edition)

The four teams

Romaa's Siripu Rowdis
Viji's Waste Parties
Veniyin Vennaigal
Vira's Vetti Dogs

The players were drafted in by the lot procedure and the following is how the fun day unfolded without any statistics about the game.

Everyone involved in the game showed up. Almost every guy came and the girls came in a number that was more than anticipated.

The girls were going blitz at the boys with their rants when they were playing, they were so great and so spontaneous. The boys too everything they could in response but today it was girls, girls and lots of girls.
The game was played with the most efforts to maintain the rules.

The games were fun and the thing with today is everyone there was involved and that was the biggest success of the idea. It was one of the memorable days in this four years and another good thing that came off from studying in this class.

The think tank of ECE - B, take a bow.

The finale was played with some great spirit and sportsmanship(the degree that was needed for this level of cricket). The "franchisees" were keenly following or putting up a great act like following and were with their teams the whole time during the matches.

After the finals, the girls sponsored 6 litres of cool drinks for the tired players and there was the photo session to follow with the players and franchisees, the players alone and finally the whole gang and the whole thing was shot and recorded.

Results

Winners - Romaa's Siripu Rowdis
Runners - Vira's vetti Dogs
3rd place - Veniyin Vennaigal
4th place - Viji's Waste Parties

The whole concept was made to make a great outing as a whole and it was achieved big time. This has been a great day and one of the best and every 69 classmate of mine will agree to this. After the Awards, this idea was experimented and came off as a huge success and it gives us great pleasure to see other classes trying the same thing.

We are Supernovans and this is how we Roll !!!

Stitches is bigger than the Ashes

"Ok machan...Sure da...I ll get on it" and I ended the call with Ganesh. It was a lazy sunday afternoon and I was supposed to get started with my project. I texted Fazil about the whole thing that was decided with Ganesh. Surya was sitting in his room watching the painful last moments of Uthamaputhiran. Surya and I, apart from the fun moments as being the room mates, apart from the late night talks, had nothing monumental done, so it can be remembered by both of us in the future, as our own special room mate event.

That streak ended today when we came with the ultimate game that redefines the concept of cricket. With the aim of giving Ashes, a run for its money, I co created "Stitches" with Suriya.
the creators with the "stitch"

the official rule post of  stitches

.) It involves room mates who have interest and knowledge about cricket.

.) The ball is paper stuffed cello tape.

.) Stumps are the basket where the old clothes are supposed to go.

.) Bat should be a binded note book which must the friend's of any one of the room mates.

.) Its basically a three over game and the whole game is played knelt down.

.) It hurts like hell when you play like that so better get a pillow for the knees.

.) The room must be filled with music, I mean slam bam music, to up the tempo.

.) Music should not involve the romantic genre, as it might create diversion ;)

.) This game must be played only under proper supervision, any attempts to copy what Surya and I do are not encouraged. We are trained professionals. :P

.) Do not try any other type of balls, even for experimenting, if used, then note kilinjirum. :)

.) Do not text when you are batting, you might getting hurt by the bowler.

.) The main thing is not to tease the bowler with the girl he does not like during the game, the ball is insanely hard.

the whole game is under construction, so these are the initial rules

The Firsts :

.) Surya won the first ever toss

.) He hit the first ever four

.) I won the first ever match and hit the first ever six

.) Surya got the first catch

.) I bowled him over for the first time

inspirations : Chandler Bing and Joey Tribbiani's creation - Fireball

Superhumans do exist !!

This may be one of the most boring posts ever from me as it does not involve sports, women or a movie. Everyday when I wake up, I used to think how the world would be if I were a mutant like Wollverine or a superhero like the lightning or anyone for that matter. Later, I come down to reality and face the fact that such things are just the imaginations and there is no such thing as the "super"humans.

I, like many millions around the globe have been gifted with a pair of arms and legs and I am fortunate to have no shortcomings on my body parts. Even then the world and life seems so tough, every defeat pushes me down like hell and every time I go down, I start searching for comfort some where and one such instant, when I was standing in a very busy road trying to cross the road, a couple crossed by me. They were blind. That did not stop them from being just inside the house. The traffic was at the worst and there they were, trying to sneak through it with a stick.

This post does promote any campaign or is not for any cause but to make the point clear that these people who are termed as the "physically challenged" is not fair. It is just an under statement, as they face challenges at almost everything and the correct term to address them would be "superhumans" as their survival in this world alone proves that, they are winners.

Anything more than that, the laurels they bag, the record they break, the paralympics greats are just too good to term in a single word or a phrase. Life is too darn hard for them and all they do is that, they give the finger to life and move on. When everyone has to start from point 0 in their life, they start from point -50 and yet they go ahead with zeal and determination.

If you are searching for inspiration to go up, do big and make a mark. Instead of attending personality camps or conferences or any speeches, spend a day at an ashram or a blind school and suddenly the world seems a better place to you and there is hope. There is always hope.

Every single case study about the challenged, every single instant that we come across and every single person that makes it big all lead to a single undeniable fact. They are down on health, down on morale, down on every damn thing they want. Instead of giving it in, they fight, they fight hard, they fight so f**king hard even life becomes kind to them.

Bottomline : The more challenged they are, the better they get.

They, indeed are the super humans
