Yes I read a book and I am reviewing it !!!

I was never a lover of books, as it requires a huge amount of concentration from me(I am easily distracted), a silent place and time. Its very rare that I get all these three, and I used that time to finish The Immortals of Meluha, a brilliant read. I turned around to continue Fringe, when I saw the new Flipkart order lying on the table, and I opened to find another book - The Two Fates.

I am not the kind of guy, who reads two books in a row. Sure, I do a lot of things for a long period of time like watch all 5 days of a boring test match, sit through 16 episodes of LOST in a night. But 2 books in a row, never did and never could. It was a sunday evening and I had the strangest urge to check this book out."May be just 2 chapters" I told myself.

Five hours later, I had finished the book(I went to Pondicherry in between for 3 hours and got a new pair of slippers). So here goes the review.

The Book is by a debutante novelist, Judy Balan and looked like a parody of Two States, a novel by Chetan Bhagat. Half hour into the book and I changed my take on the book. It was no spoof, it was partially based on Two States yet refreshingly different.

The plot is simple. Characters not too many so I did not get confused. The most attractive thing about the book is that the author, a blogger takes her writing style from her blogs to her novel. She did not try to sound sophisticated by using big words. Instead she was simple and that gives the book a huge boost.

The story is from the heroine's point of view and its good enough to make you push yourself to the next page to the last. It is about a married couple who go through a marriage crisis and how the events unfold. The inter state marriage and the diversity compliments the story well.

Another important thing is that there is a character for everyone to relate to in the book. Every author tastes victory when he/she succeeds in making the reader connect to the plot on some level. Another thing to note is that her descriptive narration of every character makes you wonder if some or all the characters are based on real life people who are involved in the author's life. If it were true, I would love to meet Reshma Aunty and Trinky, also the hot chick Karthick brings home :).

The book size is relatively small and is definitely a one sit read. The whole story is so nicely written so there is good feel at the end of the book although people could predict the end(I did).

The author also manages to squeeze in her usual words she uses in her blogs(yes I read some of the blog posts) and her jargons. I would love to see her continue the way with her unique way of writing, keeping it simple and fun.

My Verdict - The Two Fates (The Story of my divorce)

An Entertaining first attempt - 3.5/5(Like it matters)

Flypaper - a movie so simple yet so catchy !!!

Amidst the hype surrounding Tendulkar's 100th ton, the arrival of Sunny Leone on Bigg Boss, two huge let downs of the latest tamil movies, Barney crying in HIMYM, Dexter Morgan trying to get near DDK and so many things, I got time to catch a movie last night and it was totally worth it.

Flypaper :

The cast is not big, the lighting in the movie sucked, or at least the one in the print which I took from the internet. The movie starts with a woman entering a bank and a woman leaving the same. So the director just pulled off an entire movie in a single building.

Patrick Dempsey, known for the cheesy girlie flicks is the lead who has an obsession with numbers walks into a bank to get change and gets trapped between two sets of robbers who come in exactly the same time to rob the bank. Ashley Judd is the female lead and she looks seriously old. The heist goes south when Patrick discovers that a FBI guy has been killed in the middle of the gun fight in the bank and he discovers there is something greater than just a heist going down in the bank.

The rest of the movie reveals which gang succeeds in getting the money with so many twists, I mean there are so frigging many twists. The cast is small yet supportive and clinical. The movie has you engaged till the final frame and that is refreshing.

The movie cannot compared with the classics like Ocean's series in the Heist category but there is a small spark in it that keeps the audience engaging. Patrick delivers big time as he takes the entire movie on his shoulders.

I would give it 8/10 against imdb's 6.3.

A Supernovan Farewell !!!

Date : 26th April
Venue : Pandiyan Hotel

Every Great thing becomes better with the way it ends

The day had finally arrived and 52 of us of the total 70 could make it to the hotel where a conference hall was booked for the final send off. The day kicked off in an ordinary fashion with people scattered around the hall filling up AG notes and having a private chat with their own gangs. Sethu, who had the whole day planned out was calling up the register numbers to divide the whole class into teams of five. The whole class was sitting in groups with a table and that gave a classy look.

The first thing was singing competition, where one from every team had to take the mike and sing. Suresh started with 3 songs from Tamil, English and Hindi which was adjudged as the winning performance by the judges. Next was I, Shriram Narayan and I made use of the mike in my own way and did not bore the people. Then Vinoth Babu came up and ended his desire of singing before the class. Virasundarii's song which impressed Ramji was heard once more, one last time(hopefully) and finally the trio of Sabrish, Prasanth and Sivagurunathan made an entertaining attempt with their remix of a classic.

The next item on the itenary was Dumb Charads which also was a hit. The only thing I will never forget is how Sriram could not act out Ayan by showing Iron Box. My mind voice read, "Ithellam kalyanam panni enna than panna pogutho". Rajkumar again proved he was the best in Dumb C and others too fared well.

It was time for lunch and the menu was rather good for the occasion and people were having a nice time with four girls using the oppurtunity to take the mike and singing songs and dedicating each one to a particular person. That ended and soft music was on for the whole lunch session.

The post lunch session started with girls and guys telling what they liked and disliked in the others and it was a slow start yet good. Then we moved on to the classic Q&A session where everyone took up the mike and people like Rajkumar and Prasanth were under some serious fire. The girls too did participate in equal amount and it was great fun.

The time crossed 5 30 and we were told, the time limit had been reached. But none of us wanted to leave. Everyone on some point was at the mike, so each and everyone would carry a pleasant memory with him/her. At the end, Sethu took the mike and started like, "This is it, no more come on da boy !!!, no more Kanna laddu thina aasaya !!" and he was not able to continue and we knew it was time. We left the hall with a soft tune of our theme song which we suttufied from Ayan's title playing on the dying moments of what was a wonderful day.

We assembled at the entrance of the hotel and started taking group photos. People were taking photos with their close ones, their lab batchmates and it was evident in everyone's face that everyone wanted some reason, any reason no matter how silly it was, to stay there some more time. Every girl walked up to every guy and let them knew that they were vacating tomorrow or the day after and guys did the same.

We could have not asked for a better send off. Four years of fun had a perfect finish. We will not miss Madurai, Madurai will miss us.

Some Classic Moments :

.) Sethu's plan for the day
.) Suresh's "itha na solliye aaganum" speeches
.) Girls like Shenbagaveni and Vimala who are supposed to be shy making full use of the mike
.) Nivas' running comments
.) The theme song in the end (yes, I had to mention it again)
.) The final Group photos
.) Some girls and even boys going down in tears
.) Every1 taking up the mike
.) Virasundarii's R-E-M-O
.) Girls singing in Lunch
.) DJ Pauldurai
.) Csk Vs MI during lunch
.) Filling up AGs
.) "I ll miss u all" by literally every one who took the mike
.) Saranya calling Raghuram as Thambi :(
.) Every second of the whole day

Now that everyone has left and there is nothing to do, all that we could do is hope we will meet sometime in future and everyone remembers the four years we had been through. We did miss the 18 who could not make it.

History Repeats Itself

june 25, 1983
sometime after 23 00 hours

He was just finishing up his works at the college and being his final year in the bachelors, he was taking a stroll to his mansion with his friends. This day was extra special as the underdogs, the Indian team takes on the mighty West Indies in the Third Prudential World Cup final and he was to see the match with his friends on a very questionable Television set on the reception hall of the place he was staying. The match ended and the Indian team emerged victorious, he went on rides through the empty roads of the city, celebrating the victory with his friends.

He was getting ready to go to this friend's place. All his friends were supposed to show up to see the grand finale of the tenth World Cup between two formidable sides, the Indians and the Lankans. It was the final year of his bachelors and the fact that this match would be the last which he will be witnessing with his college friends never left his mind. The match was witnessed completely with uninterrupted power supply, thanks to the TNEB. The Indians won it after 28 long years. He celebrated in his own way and took a drive with his friends through the city with his friends.

In the first half "he" refers to my dad and in the second half, "He" refers me.

Right from when I was little, my dad his own version of the World Cup winning moments and what happened and I never get tired of listening to it. His story always made me wonder what it would be like if I went through something same and never did I know, I will go through something exactly the  same.

The Supernovan Premier League

The whole idea came into existence as there were many attempts to do together as the whole class as the college days are racing to an end.  There was an appeal from girls to play the game of cricket involving both the guys and girls. But that idea went down the trash as it was very difficult to execute it. So boys came up with another plan to have the girls as involved as possible. So the girls divided into four teams, evolved into four franchises and started roping in boys(all 39 of em) who were the players in this case and thus evolved the Supernovan Premier League (the first and sadly the only edition)

The four teams

Romaa's Siripu Rowdis
Viji's Waste Parties
Veniyin Vennaigal
Vira's Vetti Dogs

The players were drafted in by the lot procedure and the following is how the fun day unfolded without any statistics about the game.

Everyone involved in the game showed up. Almost every guy came and the girls came in a number that was more than anticipated.

The girls were going blitz at the boys with their rants when they were playing, they were so great and so spontaneous. The boys too everything they could in response but today it was girls, girls and lots of girls.
The game was played with the most efforts to maintain the rules.

The games were fun and the thing with today is everyone there was involved and that was the biggest success of the idea. It was one of the memorable days in this four years and another good thing that came off from studying in this class.

The think tank of ECE - B, take a bow.

The finale was played with some great spirit and sportsmanship(the degree that was needed for this level of cricket). The "franchisees" were keenly following or putting up a great act like following and were with their teams the whole time during the matches.

After the finals, the girls sponsored 6 litres of cool drinks for the tired players and there was the photo session to follow with the players and franchisees, the players alone and finally the whole gang and the whole thing was shot and recorded.

Results

Winners - Romaa's Siripu Rowdis
Runners - Vira's vetti Dogs
3rd place - Veniyin Vennaigal
4th place - Viji's Waste Parties

The whole concept was made to make a great outing as a whole and it was achieved big time. This has been a great day and one of the best and every 69 classmate of mine will agree to this. After the Awards, this idea was experimented and came off as a huge success and it gives us great pleasure to see other classes trying the same thing.

We are Supernovans and this is how we Roll !!!
